From the studio:
Women Are Heroes (2008-2014) is a global art project by JR about women, who play an essential role in society but are the first victims of war, crime, rape and political or religious fanaticism. For this project, JR pasted large-scale photos of women's faces and eyes in their own communities all over the world.
The project started in 2008 in Morro da Providência, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a year later, JR created Casa Amarela, a cultural center on top of the favela, to continue to bring social change through art.
This year, we are releasing a new lithograph of a classic pasting, the main stairs going up the community all the way to Casa Amarela. It represents the first pasting JR did in Morro da Providência, which allowed him to gain the trust of the community. It also is his first anamorphosis. It is the peaceful portrait of Benedita Florencio Monteiro, who lost her grandson in 2007, kidnapped by the armed forces and sold to a rival favela.
