Synthesizing conceptual, land art, and interventionist strategies, Ericson & Ziegler developed a distinctly American community-based art practice outside the orbit of New York City. Working directly with local iconography, sites, and communities across America, the pair produced works and staged interventions with and for these communities as much as the works themselves informed onlookers in the institutionalized art world. Kate Ericson died of brain cancer in 1995. Mel Ziegler resides in Nashville, Tennessee, where he works as an artist, a farmer, and professor and chair of the Art Department at Vanderbilt University.
