About the exhibition:
Charles Hascoët's exhibition, The Zone at Submerge in Detroit, explores musicians affiliated with Underground Resistance and people affiliated with the Detroit scene from the late 80s through today, including true "Detroiters" and those who had a profound impact on the city's musical history. The show is a continuity of Charles previous DJ series, also currently showed in a group show at the Frac Corsica in France.
Behind every record produced and played to make people dance is a solo dreamer alone on stage in command of time, space, and energy. In a series of 38 paintings, Charles Hascoet depicts his subjects, the Detroit DJs and producers that recorded and transmitted a sweeping musical genre around the world. The work captures the singular moment of deep profound concentration that defines the essence of a powerful Detroit techno set, the moment the DJ goes into the zone.
Submerge is a distribution company, founded in Detroit in 1992 by Mike Banks aka Mad Mike. It is the main underground and techno distribution company in Detroit and a historic institution. Most of the labels in the city go through Submerge to distribute their music around the world. It’s truly emblematic of the city’s musical approach, dedicated to the musicians of the city. - Tamara Warren
