From the artist: "When I was around five or so, for a period of time after my parents bought me Kunihiko Hisa's pictorial encyclopedia of dinosaurs from a dinosaur exhibition at the natural history museum, I kept looking at it, intrigued.
I also had some kaiju toys around and am sure I saw them regularly. Later, after I studied sculpture and was exploring forms with clays, Tanilla just happened to emerge." - Otani Workshop
From Kaikai Kiki Sofubi Factory:
The Tanilla Sofubi (soft vinyl figure) project began around May 2021 with a 3D scan of Otani Workshop's cermaic artwork and digital sculpting it to adjust the limbs to move so that it would become a sofubi toy. Around the same time, Kaikai Kiki was constructing its own sofubi factory, and the timing of the factory's completion coincided with the Otani project; the Tanilla sofubi became the first work to be produced at the Kaikai Kiki sofubi factory.
The factory started its operation around May 2022, and we started with the training in molding and coloring. For this edition, instead of using coloring mask, Otani Workshop and Kaikai Kiki staff members carefully and painstakingly colored each piece by hand.
